Performing Artist Signing with American Sign Language

As a Performance Artist, Mona Jean, composes her original poetry crafting ASL and spoken English to mesh and sometimes adding dance.

As Circuitry & Poetry, Ms. Cedar choreographs dance with original lyrics in ASL to her husband, Jeff Boynton’s, originally composed music.

    Circuitry & Poetry

Science and art can play well together as evidenced in Circuitry& Poetry where experimental electronics accompany the communicative arts of dance, poetry and sign language.

The spirit of exploration in search of new sounds is the driving force behind circuit bending. In live performance, chance plays a large role, because of the random and chaotic nature of “circuit bent” instruments.  There is a contradiction between the desire to unleash unpredictable sounds and the desire to control them in performances, which are not repeatable.

Circuitry and Poetry is an experimental performance project which pairs the art of circuit bending with that of dance, sign language and poetry.  More black art then science, circuit bending  entails opening inexpensive electronics devices, ranging form children’s toys to keyboard instruments, exposing their circuit boards for the purpose of exploration.  Using test leads, the bender systematically creates short circuits in pursuit of sounds not intended by the manufacturer. Once this process is completed, switches and other components are installed in the device enabling the performer to activate these strange new sounds at will.  In Circuitry & Poetry, Jeff  Boynton performs on his circuit bent instruments, providing a soundscape over which Mona Jean  Cedar incorporates poetry, sign language and dance.

The spirit of exploration in search of new sounds is the driving force behind circuit bending. More black art than science, circuit bending entails opening inexpensive electronics devices, ranging from children’s toys to keyboard instruments. The exposed circuit boards are thus made vulnerable to poking, probing, and prodding.  Using test leads, the bender systematically creates short circuits in pursuit of sounds not intended by the manufacturer. Once this process is completed, switches and other components are installed in the device, enabling the performer to activate these strange new sounds at will. About Us

Performing Artist Signing with American Sign Language

Mona Jean Cedar’s extensive dance training imbues her performance poetry with such gracefulness she is literally “Poetry in motion”! She has been dancing her poetry for over 20 years all around the globe.

Mona Jean’s poetry is composed and performed simultaneously in Spoken Word and American Sign Language (ASL) – quite a difficult task as each is different in grammar, syntax, morphology, etc. and yet she entwines the two exquisitely becoming exponentially communicative and mesmerizing

Her poetry pedigree includes being on the Long Beach Slam team; being invited by Marc Smith to interpret the National Slams in Chicago; shortly after adding The Women of the World Poetry Slam and Toronto’s Voices of Today every year until the pandemic; interpreting for the Coupe du Monde de Poesie (an international slam) in Paris for five years when in the final year she actually competed and represented the United States;  during the pandemic interpreting virtually for The Poetry Foundation in Chicago; and multitudinous readings…

Mona Jean’s poetry is unique and exponentially expressive with words and signs and her dancer’s body language!  Her poems have a poignantly positive message which inspires and warms the hearts of her audiences who are mesmerized by her naturally infectious vibrant vitality inciting them with joy and awe!
